Workington Heritage Group

One important role of the Workington Heritage Group, through The Helena Thompson Museum, is to interact with the people of Workington and visitors to the area. This is achieved through presenting exhibitions and displays, interaction with visitors using museum artefacts and talks on the different aspects of lifestyle as portrayed in the museum.

An additional and possibly more essential role of the Helena Thompson is that it provides a facility for a significant number of social groups on an affordable cost basis, resulting in a footfall of around 1000 people per month, the majority attending social activities. The Helena Thompson fulfills a role beyond that of a traditional museum and is very much a community venue.

The Workington Heritage Group is made up of volunteers who are committed to the aim of preserving the heritage of Workington. We consider the Helena Thompson fundamental to the heritage of our town.

The group is actively working on projects to improve, upgrade the buildings and develop the range of activities taking place at the museum.

We are grateful for the support of Cumbria Community Foundation as well as Cumberland Building Society Foundation and Allerdale Borough Council in helping fund and support the Helena Thompson Museum and in particular the development of this website.
